Forest School: A Path to Holistic Education
In a world where traditional classrooms often take the spotlight, forest schools bring a breath of fresh air with their nature-focused approach to learning.
Rooted in outdoor exploration and play, Forest school programmes are growing in popularity for the wonderful way they nurture children’s minds, bodies and wellbeing. So, what makes a forest school so special and why are more parents and educators embracing this unique approach?
What is a Forest School?
A forest school is a unique educational approach that brings learning to life in the great outdoors. Using forests, woodlands and other natural spaces as the classroom, this model invites children to explore, play and grow in a hands-on, nature-filled environment. Originating in Scandinavia, forest schools focus on child-led discovery, practical activities and fostering a love for the environment.
Picture children building shelters, identifying plants, sharing stories around a campfire, or learning survival skills—all guided by experienced educators. It's an inspiring way to nurture curiosity, confidence and a deep connection with nature!

The Benefits of Forest School
1. Fosters Independence and Confidence
Forest schools encourage children to take charge of their own learning. By exploring and experimenting in a low-pressure environment, they develop problem-solving skills and confidence. Whether it’s navigating a trail or building a small structure, these accomplishments foster a sense of independence.
2. Enhances Physical Health
Spending time outdoors has well-documented health benefits. Fresh air, physical activity and exposure to natural light contribute to better cardiovascular health, stronger immune systems and reduced stress. In forest schools, children naturally engage in physical exercise as they climb, run and explore.
3. Promotes Emotional Well-Being
Nature has a calming effect on the mind and forest schools leverage this to support emotional resilience. The unstructured setting allows children to decompress, express themselves and form deeper connections with peers and mentors. Studies have shown that outdoor learning environments can reduce anxiety and improve mood.
4. Sparks Creativity and Curiosity
The ever-changing landscape of a forest stimulates imagination and curiosity. Children learn to adapt to their surroundings, ask questions and think creatively to solve challenges. Whether they’re creating art with natural materials or building a shelter, the opportunities for inventive thinking are endless.
5. Builds Environmental Awareness
In an age of climate change and environmental challenges, fostering a connection with nature is more critical than ever. Forest schools instill a sense of responsibility and respect for the environment. Children learn about ecosystems, conservation and sustainable practices, cultivating lifelong eco-conscious habits.
About our Forest School
Building on the wonderful success of our Woodmouse Forest School for pre-schoolers, we have introduced a brand-new Forest School designed for older children aged 6-16 years! Weekly outdoor sessions will take place in our stunning woodlands at The Sustainability Centre, nestled in the heart of the beautiful South Downs National Park.
Our Forest School is all about being child-led, meaning they get to explore their interests and choose the activities they want to do. If they come up with their own ideas, even better! Activities naturally change with the seasons and might include things like:
Fire lighting and camp fire cooking
Woodwork with tools
Shelter building
Natural art
Conservation tasks
Camp set up / take down with tarps and knots
All our sessions are thoughtfully and safely led by our skilled and experienced Forest School Leader, Emma. We kindly ask that each child attends with a parent, grandparent, or guardian, with one adult supervising up to two children.
Great news – we still have a few spots available for this year’s Spring Term! If you’re interested, don’t hesitate to reach out to our Education team for more information and to secure your place. We’d love to have you join us!
